We use an 1/8" or 9/64" depending upon the material. 9/64" in harder material like aluminum or really hard decking. Screw in by hand.

Probably a simple sounding question, but I ordered a bunch of 444002 snaps for making a boat cover for the son in law's launch and was wondering what size pilot people use to install the stud in thick fiberglass hull.   In the past I have broken studs in other material by using too small of a pilot, and stripped some from using too large. Just curious what a good starting point would be?

P. S. The sailrite snap tool is unreal. I still cuss myself for not getting one sooner. I have always hated setting snaps, but now it is a breeze!
