I have an old White Model 628 machine that sews great ,but the motor will hum and have to turn the hand wheel before it will start sewing. Is this a problem with the motor or the Foot speed control ?

It could be either. You might also make sure the belt is not just too tight. If not, my guess is that the motor is the culprit.
Thanks, Matt

Tryed your suggestion and loosened the belt, the machine ran ok . Used the machine most of the day on my sail i got from sailrite . Then all at once the motor went dead , then i checked the Foot control and the contacts are in bad shape. I will be ordering a new control from Sailrite tomorrow. Thank You Matt for the Help
