My fairly new sailrite sail has broken the thread on the sewn clew ring at the first reef point. Do I need to remove the grommet to repair this thread? Also the grommet at the tack of the first reef has cracked. Is this from over setting the grommet?
Thanks |

To repair the ring with broken threads you will need to remove the eyelet and restitch the ring in place then reinstall the eyelet. The cracked eyelet itself is only a concern if the crack is cutting the threads of the sewn ring or allowing the rope or shackle that is attached to the eyelet to cut the threads.
Over setting the eyelet can cause both of these problems. The eyelet only needs to be set enough to protect the threads and when properly set it often will turn in the ring when forced. It is common to set the eyelet and have it rotate and assume that it is not set enough then hit it a few more times to stop the rotation but then in the process cut the threads or crack the eyelet. Feel free to email me directly if you need more information Jefff@sailrite.com

I would use a dremel tool see the video
https://www.sailrite.com/How-to-Remove-a-Spur-Grommet-Video this shows a brass grommet but the brass eyelet will work the same way just take a little longer. |
