What type of backing tape should be used when making french seams in marine upholstery?  This is for above deck, so it will get wet.  The upholstery is 30 oz expanded vinyl.

Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,

A polyester webbing would work but I recommend that you fold the seam hem to one side of the seam instead of separating them. This will create a more water-tight semi-flat feld seam. Top stitch the seam to finish the process. Also be sure to use a double sided (seamstik) to hold the seam while sewing. This will also help to waterproof the seam.

Thanks, Matt

Hi Matt,

I appreciate the advice.  Would the seamstick for canvas be a better choice in this application?

Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,

No you do not want the Acrylic basting tape (#129). Instead use the standard seamstik. Otherwise with a vinyl fabric you risk the adhesive creeping out of the seam when it gets hot.

Thanks, Matt
