I've got a cushion project where the backrests will be attached to the structure with velcro.  The cushion cover fabric is an interior grade... not sure what it is called but kind of like a micro-suede (ultra-suede?). Bottom line:  not as hefty as Sunbrella or naugahyde.

Would it be advisable to reinforce the cushion back somehow where the velcro is sewn on?  If so, how?

Thanks,
-Sue

Hi Sue, If the material is Ultrasuede (the real stuff), it is quite strong and will not need a backing. Otherwise just sew an inside patch of anything in the vicinity of the velcro placement. I have used everything from scrap Sunbrella to any light and soft polyester material for this purpose in the past.
Thanks, Matt

Hi Sue:

My concern is that the fabric (if it is not Ultrasuede) around the velcro might stretch a bit from repeated cycles of removing the cushions.  By all means, reinforce, but sew the reinforcenent about an inch outside the dimensions of the velcro.  Reinforcing fabric can be sewn on the insides if the covers.

I hope that this helps.
