Hi,

We were wondering what the advantages and disadvantages are of using hot glue (From a hot glue gun) to fix the seams and attach webbing with snaps etc., to sunbrella prior to sewing it with our sailrite machine? We have used this technique and it works great.  You see no glue in the final project, and there is no need for pins, clamps or basting.  Plus it seems to hold the fabric from slipping.   The sailrite has no problem going right through the cooled hot glue which is inside the seams.

Afterwords, an iron can be used to reseal the internal glue, making the seams almost waterproof where the stiching holes are.  This further locks the threads.

This seems to work really well in getting things positioned and set up prior to running them through the sailrite machine but we are wondering what are the pro's and cons of doing this?  Of course care has to be used to prevent this glue from getting on the visible parts of the project.
Thank You,

Walt,

Hi Walt, Nothing wrong with this at all so long as the hot glue is acrylic based. Otherwise it might yellow overtime and be unsightly. Of course with very dark colors of Sunbrella I don't think the discoloration would ever show.
Thanks, Matt

Hi Matt,

We are using black Sunbrella, and the hot glue is inside of folded seams, under webbing, and under hook/loop strips and up against  where it can not be seen.  It then gets sewed and the sailrite machine seems to just go right though it.

Thank You,

I don't see any issues with doing that at all. Matt
