When restitching or repairing canvas projects does one stitch on the previous stitching line ?
I have seen it done this way but it seems to leave alot of holes in one line of the material thus weakening the fabric or so I would think.....reminds me of " tear on the dotted line".
I have also seen new lines of stitching.....which does not look as neat but I would imagine it is stronger.
I never know what to do when repairing canvas ........can any one offer suggestions.......what is the accepted way when doing work for others.......that I am being paid for ?
thanks again so much for the great source of information .

Hi Karin:
If you resew the old stitch line, you will be concerned with two perforated lines. The first is the line of stitches that you have just sewn that will probably tear out. The second is the perforated line that you will intentionally tear out as you remove the check from your checkbook to pay for the piece that you tried to repair and are now replacing.

Dan ,
Your sense of humor is great....love it. Thanks , so I guess neatness does not always count. I did a small tarp for a guy like this.....used new stitching lines , but it sure did not look pretty !
Thanks for your quick reply and on a Sunday.

Funny, I was just coming to ask if there is anyway to lessen those holes. They look really messy and lets face it, we sometimes make mistakes that have to come out. Without being perfect is there anything you can do?

For what it is worth, I never worry about stitch holes weakening fabric. As I see it fabric is nothing but a construct full of holes where the yarns intersect. Needles may break some of these yarns but, I am convinced that the yarns are often just pushed aside by the needle's passage. Has anyone actually experienced a fabric tear on stitch lines? Well, yes I have a couple times but it was only because the fabric was sun weakened and the stitches were relatively recent and thus much stronger -- it was the thread that caused those tears, not the stitch holes. |
