I have purchased sail numbers and laid them on nylon spinnaker material to act as weather cloths.  Need I sew them on or are they OK and can withstand the shaking...to Bermuda.

They should stay in place for years! No need to sew sail numbers unless they are placed on a course canvas like Sunbrella and, even there, they adhere quite well.
