I want to create a support case with you and send two videos which could be related to the problem. One is about rotational timing and the other is needle bar height. Can you call me at 800-348-2769 so we can set this up?
Thanks, Matt

My husband has the cellphone now and he will be back on the boat  Monday. I will try to call then. Thank you. Your company is always so quick and responsive - it's very much appreciated.

I rechecked everything on the machine again today. When I check the timing, the needle appears to be in perfect position relative to the gib hook. So then I put 4 layers of sailcloth under the presser foot and watched what happened when I put the needle through the layers. Now the needle is rubbing on the gib hook. So I readjusted the timing so that the needle didn't touch the gib hook and retried sewing. I get perfect stitches now with 4 layers of fabric. (Better than yesterday). I can sew 5 layers with only 1 skipped stitch, but when I try 6 layers I get multiple skipped stitches. With 8 layers the needle keeps pulling out of the holder.  I'm using 9.5 oz dacron cloth. Is 4 or 5 layers the most that the machine can handle - or should I continue to try to adjust the timing based on how many layers I'm sewing through if that's even possible. Thank you

What needle are you using. For 8 layers you need a #22 SD1 needle which will cut the material a bit before push penetrating. Also the larger needle is less prone to bending in hard Dacron.

I hope that you will call Sailrite and check the timing with us on the phone. It sounds as though you are close but not right on with your timing -- there should be NO SKIPPING! And the needle must stay in its slot. Could you try finding a screwdriver that gives you better leverage?

Was Sue's issue solved with the use of a #22 SD1 needle?

I am making my first sail from a sailrite kit and having the same issue with more than 3 layers of Sail Cloth. I have checked timing and needle bar height and all looks good.

Thanks,

Hale

Don't know. Hopefully Sue will let us know. I do know that we use the #22 SD1 needles in our sail loft and they improve machine capability immensely.
Thanks, Matt

Thanks Matt. I have just ordered some #22 SD1 needles. Will let you know how they work or if I have other issues.

Just tried the #22 SD1 needle. I am sewing through 7 layers with no skipped stitches.

Thanks!
