Hello,

I am recovering cabin cushions.  The settee cushion backs have snaps on the back (as shown in the photos below that I found online. 

Would you suggest that I attach the snaps directly to the cushion fabric? Or do I need to make a snap flap/extra piece of material first and then sew the snaps onto that?

I like sewing in a fabric or webbing piece through which the snap can be installed. This makes it much easier to actually "snap" the parts. Here is a video that shows the whole recommended process on a cushion:
