I would like to install new foam in my cabin cushions, replacing the fabric- the old cushions have 2 buttons sewn through the foam. any issue with just cutting the thread holding the buttons and stuffing in the new foam?

That should work nicely, I don't see any reason it wouldn't.

The only possible negatives I can think of depend on the fabric.  If the fabric stretched locally where the buttons are, it may not lie perfectly smooth without them.  Also, if the buttons themselves poked a hole in the fabric, depending on fabric weave and pattern, the hole could be visible.  Worst case - put the buttons back in!

I'm going to ad this (FYI) If your foam is kinda smashed in some areas you can use a steam iron and it will come back to new shape.
The only dumb question is the one not asked.
