We just purchased a new dinghy, and first on the list to make is a dinghy cover for use when it is on the storage rack/hanging on our davits.  Does anyone have a recommendation for the best fabric for this purpose? We will be living aboard, so something lightweight (and therefore easily folded and stowed) would be preferable.  Also, any hints or tips on construction are always appreciated!

The next project will be dinghy chaps that will essentially be permanently installed.  Is Sunbrella still the preferred fabric for this project?

Thanks, everyone!
Beth

Hi Beth,
I like Sunbrella Marine grade for the cover. It will last the longest under the sun. But if light weight is more important, you could go with SurLast. It is made by Sunbrella but out of solution dyed Polyester instead of Acrylic. The SurLast will fold more compactly.

Chaps should be Sunbrella, heavily reinforced with Shelter-Rite at the bow, around oarlocks, and in critical wear areas.
Thanks, Matt Grant
