I'm curious to know if anyone has experience with broadseaming a tired main to get more use out of it? There's not much info to be found on the subject.

It can certainly be done. What you want is "The Mainsail Manual" by Jim Grant. This is the best text I know of covering the subject of broadseams and traditional sailmaking:

I have had the Mainsail Manuel for many years...
My understanding is that I can open some leech seams about one and a half times the batten lengths and take in 1/4" to remove some of the baggy shape. While I'm at it I'll remove some roach so the top batten will clear the backstay... Does the 1/4" and length sound "ballparkish" enough? Edited by Jstaff - 04 February 2013 at 10:42am |

Yes that sounds like a good starting plan. Doing this will flatten the trailing edge of the sail and it should reduce the shape of the sail overall.
